Ditch The Scented Candles - Phthalates Increase Anxiety!
Oct 21, 2024I’m not kidding when I say the scented products in your home may be contributing to your ill health symptoms including brain fog, overwhelm, inability to focus, anxiousness, poor sleep, depression, impulsivity, feeling scattered, unwanted or stubborn weight gain, headaches, and hormonal imbalances of all kinds. Frequently people will assume they have some genetic condition or that their ADHD, anxiety, or perimenopausal symptoms are just a normal part of modern life. First of all, just because something is common does not make it normal. Secondly, genetics load the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger.
Phthalates are a man-made chemical compound used in many plastics and household products. The compound is a known endocrine disruptor, wreaking havoc on hormone health. If you think you have hit early menopause, check your environment for hidden phthalates before you head for hormone replacement therapy. Same goes for the onset of anxiety symptoms like nervousness, dread, overwhelm, heart palpitations, upset digestive tract, excessive worry and the like - these symptoms are often a combination of environmental toxins, nutrient deficiencies, depleting lifestyle choices creating disrupted natural rhythms and dysfunctional mitochondria. Bottom line, I see these “problems” as mitochondrial and circadian rhythm issues rather than genetic, and chemicals such as phthalates play a role in the damage.
Here’s a suggestion - go on a phthalate hunt around your home, gather up all the scented products like candles, laundry detergent, any of those nasty plug-in air fresheners, soaps, personal hygiene products, cleaning supplies, etc. Box all that stuff up (if not throwing it out) and put it in a place where it cannot be smelled. Perhaps an attic, or corner in the garage? Live without the scented stuff for a solid two weeks, preferably longer, and see how you feel. Note any subtle differences in you or your family members’ health. Don't be surprised if you feel less bloated, experience better brain function, and have a more stable mood.
Could it really be that big of a deal? So many people have all those scented things in their homes. Well, yes, they do and so many people struggle with anxiety, depression, ADHD symptoms, gut/digestive problems, hormonal imbalance and metabolic health issues. And, most people end up on medication to try to manage all or some of the symptoms that are created by our environment, lifestyle and diet. Getting rid of the phthalates is a much easier and cheaper way to support your health than using medication(s). Just try it! See for yourself.
